This very interesting video explains some of the risks of not having a checking account. It starts with facts from the Katrina victims. Those victims without bank accounts suddenly found they had no access to necessary cash. When they were displaced, they had no money.
Another fact, cashing pay checks without a bank account requires check cashing fees. These fees can add up to be much higher than the cost of a bank checking account.
