Winston Salem’s Hanesbrands recognized for green programs!

Hanesbrands

Congratulations to our very on Winston Salem Hanesbrands for being green.

Hanesbrands has been named the Energy Star 2010 Partner Agency of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of its energy conservation programs.

Beyond that, Hanesbrands announced new goals to increase it’s use of renewable energy and reduce its emissions.

I’m impressed that Hanesbrands has been tracking its carbon footprint since 2007.  Goals for reductions in energy use, carbon emissions and water use by 2012 are to:

• Increase the percentage of worldwide energy use from renewable resources to 30 percent. In 2009, 25 percent of the company’s energy came from renewable sources.

• Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 15 percent per product produced.  The company has already reduced these emissions by 12 percent.

• Reduce water use by 10 percent per product produced.  They’ve already surpassed this goal, achieving an 18 percent reduction and, rather than being satisfied, they’re setting a new goal!

In 2009, they also reduced emissions from transportation by 41 percent as a result of efforts to switch product shipping from truck to rail and minimizing the use of air freight.

Congratulations and thanks to Hanesbrands for setting such a great corporate example!
