There’s money buried in your yard! Yup, you can actually increase the value of your home by improving the landscaping. A Money Magazine survey found that good landscaping can add seven to fourteen percent to the value of your home. That’s Huge!
A survey by Husqvarna states: “Checking with real estate agents, more than seventy percent believed that a neglected garden lowers property prices by somewhere between five to fifteen percent. Another seventeen believed the effect could be even higher.”
They also found the top five garden elements globally to be:
- Well-maintained lawn
- Inviting social area
- Stone paths and walkways
- Decorative trees
- Decorative bushes
How’s your curb appeal? An attractive curb appeal gets prospective buyers into the house. Many buyers decide NOT to purchase simply by looking at the exterior of a home. If the exterior looks bad, it’s understandable that they assume the entire house was not well maintained.
In Landscaping Adds Value I wrote, “the American Society of Landscape Architects found that homeowners can receive between 100% and 200% of the money they invest in professional landscaping services when they sell their homes. Michigan State University research found that proper landscaping can increase a home’s resale value by about twelve percent. And a study by the U.S. Forest Service found that trees alone add three to seven percent to property values.”
So, money spent on well done landscaping is worth it for:
- the value of your home
- curb appeal which helps with selling
- the aesthetic enjoyment for yourself, your family and your neighbors
- trees and plants are healthy for the environment.
Now that Winter has passed and our wonderful Spring is here, it’s time to get outside and spruce up your yard. Start by raking up dead leaves and debris, digging up plants that didn’t survive the winter, cutting back dead branches from trees and bushes, killing weeds before they bloom and take over, and trimming and shaping the hedges. Enjoy a beautiful yard now and get paid for it when you sell.
You can’t lose with good landscaping. Invest, enjoy and reap huge rewards!
